Three arrested after police seize 196 kilos of bhang in Samburu

66 bales of bhang estimated at a street value of Sh5.9 million were confiscated and have since been secured as exhibits.

Three suspects have been arrested at Archers Post in Samburu County after they were found trafficking 196 kilogrammes of bhang.

The bhang had been concealed beneath sacks of beans.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the driver of KCZ 198E trailer Isaack Mohammed Bakacha, 34 and two other occupants, Harun Mohammed Galgalo and Ali Abdikadir Mohammed aged 20 and 22 respectively were intercepted on Monday night by a multi-agency operation team.

The arrests came after the police K-9 unit at the roadblock discovered the concealed drugs.

"After a thorough search, 66 bales of bhang estimated at a street value of Sh5.9 million were confiscated and have since been secured as exhibits. The vehicle has also been detained pending further investigations," DCI said.

The incident comes a week after a sitting Member of the County Assembly and two other suspects were arrested with 57 stones of bhang in Isiolo Town.

The Chari ward Member of the County Assembly in Isiolo Abdullahi Golicha Meja and Nura Abdi Diba were arrested on the outskirts of Isiolo town by the Transnational Organized Crimes Unit officers and a multi-agency team.

Two of the suspects were flagged down within Isiolo town while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser before the multi-agency team proceeded to the house of Nura Abdi at Kambi Garba Estate on the outskirts of Isiolo town where six gunny bags containing the 57 stones of the prohibited herb were recovered.
